The writing gets better and better as the books go on. In this book, Anvil Gate - book 3, there was an effective use of flashbacks. It wasn't just flashback for flashback sake. They served a purpose. Tho they could have still done better. The character development did improve, but I wanted more - but maybe I'm just a greedy reader.

Masterful storytelling, really fills in characters and locations from the games so well, it's truly worth reading if you are a fan.

This was a decent Gears book and flowed the best out of the series. I was a little annoyed that a good bit of it was from Baird's point of view (if you play the game you know he's annoying) but it surprisingly wasn't that bad. Interested to find out if another book will be in the works after the third game is released and what that story line will be like.

The best of the Gears books, and one of Traviss' best books, period.

She made care about Hoffman and Baird, and the addition of two more factions solved the issue that faced the last book: namely, that COG vs Stranded just isn't that interesting. With another society, one traditionally at war with the COG, joining New Jacinto, and the new threat that the lambent represent, the book had plenty of the moral quandries and tough as nails combat Traviss is known for.

Happy to know that Traviss is writing Gears 3, and hoping that some of the dangling threads from the boom will be resolved in the game.
