Jokes about long-term relationships. I loled at a lot of these.

I thought that this would be cute cuz I really loved Roz Chast’s other two books that I read, and I found her cartoons to be funny. And the cover with two adults looking frazzled with general complaints, two of which were “I can hear you chewing” and “don’t interrupt” seemed awfully familiar to me. I was thinking that I would totally relate to this. And while yes, there were some relatable things in here that most of us in a relationship can relate to, half of these things were very specific and had nothing to do with me, or else they just weren’t funny even tho they were trying to be. Liiiike “Whoever is in the state of more undress gets out of having to pick up Olivia when she decides at 1am that she’s had enough of the slumber party.” and “If I’m on the phone with you and I suddenly say ‘noodle pudding’ call the police. I’m being held at gunpoint. Or I could be hungry.” or “If you buy an expensive Valentines Day gift save the receipt. You might need it to prove how generous you are.”

Just not that funny to me and made me realize that her cartoons weren’t very funny either when not matched with funny thoughts/dialogue. There were enough relatable bits to give it a couple stars, and it was a quick read, but overall meh.

You can see all my reviews here: Books Are The New Black

This is her newer release and I did enjoy it. Although, I didn't enjoy it as much as the previous one. I didn't find myself laughing out loud as much!

There's a lot more illustrations in this book and there's more to read too. It's not the issue at all. It's actually a preferred thing. I think I just didn't find it as funny and maybe a lot of the "rules" are things that I've heard a lot.

If you love this author, definitely check this one out. It's still good and a really cool, quick read. If you haven't read this author before, read her previous (Eulogy) book first!!

This book was exactly what I needed on this dreary Monday morning.  I wonderful combination of humor and truths had me smiling the entire time.  I could feel myself chucking and nodding along to some of the "tips" and shaking my head but still laughing at others.  I think this would make a great gift for a partner if they see the humor in it; I definitely will be showing this to my husband because I know he has a similar sense of finding humor even in the truthful bits.  Even the forward had me smiling. The drawings were wonderful and I definitely can see myself picking up this book and flipping through it from time to time.

Thanks to the publisher for sending me this unsolicited copy, I had such a fun time reading through and sharing my honest thoughts.

Pleasant but not my cup of tea entirely. I know it's a style choice, but as all the illustrations are overweight middle-aged folk, the humor seems aimed at that same demographic.
