Such promise with this book! I wanted to love it, but it wasn't quite there. Leah is the only character with much depth and although we see her struggles, more of the subplot being woven into the story would have not only driven the pace of the book, but the overall connectedness. Solid read, not to the level of Where the Crawdads Sing.

This book has such beautiful descriptions of what home and family means, and gives the quiet reminiscence of books such as Lisa Wingate’s “Before We Were Yours.” This book deals with the social issues that were spreading throughout the country in the American 1930’s. Just after the Great Depression, and before the turmoil of the Second World War, the American South was quickly developing. The themes and descriptors were SO similar to BWWY, and I loved that this touched on an issue that not many people know or hear about in the United States, and that is the rise of eugenics. However, the disappointment for me in this book comes from the fact I wish they dove much deeper into the issue. I would have loved this to have been much more of a focal point throughout the whole novel, and not just in the last couple of hours. That’s really where all the action is, the last hour and a half of the book. This book just left me wanting MORE from the story.
