This isn't a happy story and will tug at your heart strings for this young girl trying to find her place to call home. Meagan Church skims the surface of the rise of American Eugenics in 'The Last Carolina Girl,' but raises more awareness of who controls decisions regarding a female and her body. There's a lot to digest in Leah's story -- parental loss, poverty, family secrets, loneliness, body ownership, and home. Church's writing reminded me of the way 'Atonement' was written -- a recollection of events than the story actively happening.

This was a quick read due to the page count and how much skimming I did. This author focused more on being descriptive about the outdoors than putting effort into the plot. Leah's grief was flat and forgotten, it was pretty predictable who Mrs. Griffin was, and the plot as a whole should have been more fleshed out. At first, I was wondering why she never told Jesse or anyone for that matter that she was getting mistreated but then I thought she's only 14 and a kid, that happens. But, honestly, her time with the Griffins was mostly her just taking whatever happened to her. I like that the author covered and is spreading the word about the Eugenics movement, but the story she used to do that was so basic and lackluster. I could make a basic outline for this book in about 3-4 points and that's the gist of the book with fluffy description. I will not be reading anything else from this author.
