Life-Changing

“(Some) will never speak the language of love without an accent.”

Dr. Bruce D. Perry is a sensitive author who writes on the very difficult topic of child abuse and neglect by using a compassionate and approachable writing style. His style of communication embodies genuine love and as such his tone is that of a very evolved self-actualized person.

These are notes to aid my memory:

Tina
- pervasive sexual abuse
- promiscuity
- aggressive approach to sex as a means to self-regulate novelty
- ingrained pattern of behavioural boundary issues
- untreated

Sandy
- CPTSD from witnessing and being subjected to extreme violence
- Memory patterning of prediction, duration
- A form of tolerance called: memory habituation
- Trauma treatment – child in control of titrating the re-experiencing/re-enactment to tell and share the narrative
- Preferring the certainty of misery to the misery of uncertainty

Application of Fear/indoctrination/cult group

Laura
- Failure to thrive = skin hunger
- The brain as a historical organ
- Touch therapy (always around other witnessing adults)

Leon
- Psychopathy
- Due to abandonment during critical societal development of his mind
- NPD? Still able to take note of others behaviours
- Emotionally frozen in ice – this distorts their own emotions and how they perceive the emotions of other
- Higher levels of pain and pleasure necessary in order to feel anything at all
- Untreatable

Connor
High degree of autism
Extreme parental neglect
Therapy: Rewiring circuitry with developmental exercises involving patterning, music, dance and massage

Amber
Sexual abuse
High-level disassociation
Therapy: Medication to dampen arousal and alleviate depression and CBT

James
Munchausen by Proxy
Once removed from this killing environ he thrived.

My own particular love accent was garnered by a high level of ACE (adverse childhood events) that led me to develop Asperger traits. Almost a year ago, I took the Aspie Quiz and my results reveal;
Your Empathizing Quotient is 23. Baron-Cohen (2003) suggests that this means "you have a lower than average ability for understanding how other people feel and responding appropriately."
It is with a mindful approach that I am still learning about compassionate empathy.

Life changing, especially as a parent and future pediatric healthcare provider. Horribly sad but uniquely important. I still have nightmares about this book, but will continue to recommend it.

This book took me as long as it did because it wasn’t the main book that I read so the reading wasn’t very consistent. I would read 3 chapters then wait 2 months before I read more of it. I still read in that time just not this book.

As a child who spent the first few months of my life in a neglected household with very little understanding of what happened in my early life this book made me understand why I act or acted the way I did and what helped and why. It also made me realize why some of my friends or family or just people I know act the way they do. This book opened my eyes and made me understand what causes people, especially children and teens, to act the way they do and the best way to fix it.

The stories inside the book not only made a plot in the story they also taught me the outcome of trauma and the ways people handle it.

This book took me a while to finish because the first chapter is quite dark. But an excellent resource for anyone working with children and wants to be more informed on how trauma can impact the brain's development.
