Really good book that captures many aspects of authoritarianism with meaningful insights and tactics of a totalitarian government. Horrifying and real. 1984 illustrates what fascism does to a society and the lengths those in power will go to exert that power over others.

reading 1984 during this year (2025) wasn’t the most amazing idea lol. it is truly a dark world i would hate to see come to fruition. i partly started reading thinking that i would get some kind of ~answer from the book, like maybe orwell had some master key to surviving a fascist government but it really just left me feeling defeated and hopeless. i wish winston had some other resolution, i wish he had died still knowing the truth. but also the way the thought police were able to break him,,,just wow

so glad to have finished this one, but to also have had the chance to read it in the first place. this book is more timely than ever. some parts made me deeply uncomfortable and frustrated, but that was the point.
