This novel falls into a pattern of repetitive trauma and triggers that slightly escalate at each occurrence to the point they become unbelievable. I was buddy reading this book with my boyfriend. After he completed the book before me and we discussed up to the point I had reached, I realized by his description most of my qualms with the story up to this point only proceed to become more pronounced as the novel continues. I would HIGHLY caution  anyone from picking up this book unless you are equipped to deal with the sheer quantity of trauma this novel dumps on you. I’d advise looking through the content warnings and taking them seriously. If I had to give an overall rating, I’d say it warrants a 2/5. My qualms with the plot and characters doesn’t fully overshadow Hanya Yanagihara’s beautiful writing.

This book is plain depressing. The only thing that made me feel something (happy/sad) was the oxytocin from my tears. The plot follows four friends through their adulthood and eventually focuses on one, Jude who has lived a very terrible life and has been left to deal with the trauma (physical and emotional). His relationships with his three friends evolves over the years but whatever happens his trauma follows close. This is all that really stood out to me in this book and honestly I can no longer care anymore. After 600+ pages all I remembered from this book was constantly feeling pity for Jude, page after miserable page. It’s be more worth the read had the author reduced by at least 50%. I can only withstand ~ <5 ~ violent, scenes of abuse. By the end of the book, they’d already lost their effect.
