Devastating and addicting. I’ve never felt so attached to a book and it’s characters. This will be one I reread and recommend for years to come.

<<<SPOILERS>>>
first off totally 100% respect anyone who hated this
i feel like i would have if i hadnt skim read a lot of the bits of jude hating himself
A lot of the time it seemed like Yanagihara had found cool metaphors for jude hating himself and was just excited to use them
but there was also some relatable stuff (right??? other people thought that too right???) like 'He had never done it before and so he didnt know how sad and slow and difficult it was to end a friendship' OOF that was the bit that made me cry the most, as well of some other bits about like friendships and stuff and wanting to help someone/talk to them about something but not and being stressed to cause you love them and want to keep them safe but you dont want to cross their barriers :'(
I didnt really sob? like i knew jude was gonna die before i even met him and suspect willem for about 150 pgs before
did shed a couple tears at harold and julia listening to judes cd and harold talking to the painting of Willem

Do not read this book! I don’t see value or a message. It is just everything bad that could happen to a person, happening to a person. Basically trauma porn and it never stops. Trauma being portrayed doesn’t make something „deep“ or good in any way.

My best advise to everybody who is still going to read this book, is to stop when you find it makes you sad.

I have cried for probably a total of 2 hours while reading this book. And im going to have to write this review tomorrow because i physically cant think about anything without crying.

In part I (lispenard street) i was instantly hooked, i thought that as this book was quite thick that it would be challenging to get into but it was easy to pick up. My only complaint in the begginging was trying to decipher who was talking in each chapter of that section. As the book went on, I knew when it was JB talking and so on. The way that Yanigahara introduced and told you about characters is exceptional, i felt i knew these characters for my whole life so when something bad happened to them i felt like something bad had happened to me.

For the whole book you are waiting for Jude to die, wether it be suicide or medical reasons, so when
Willem died
my gut was wrenched. Seeing the way that jude experienced
grief was heart breaking, especially as it was Willem who died and he relied on Willem for so many things
. I feel like
malcom and sophies death
was over shadowed by
Willems
. Its not that i didnt think that
willems death
was over explained, i just wish that we could feel a bit of
grief for malcom and sophie
. Maybe if there was a chapter that was in JBs perspective then you would feel a bit more about
malcom and sophie

It has now been two months since I read this book and I think about it on a daily basis. The thing that stays in my brain is how much trauma Jude had to go through, and how he continually got up and kept on going. The fact that JB ends up as a
drug addict
and was the only one of the friend group
who is alive at the end of the book
really breaks my heart, and how what he did to Jude made him never forgive him.

The parts that i found the saddest were:
When jude felt the need to apologise to everyone (harold, julia, willem, jb etc) after he had been emotionally, sexually, physically and mentally abused by Caleb

Obviously,
Willems death, as it was very unexpected. I felt like my best friend for my whole life had also died

seeing the way that Jude coped (or didnt) with willems death. Like the way he bought a cuishon the height of willem to put in his bed at night time. Watching his films. He bought boxes of willems scent. He kept Lantern house, the bedside table, the exact way that willem had left

jude finding the cabinet of stuff about him in the lantern house, that willem had kept

harold begging jude to keep going on with his life after willem died, the promise. Even when jude threw the plate against the wall, Harold still continued to love jude and hope that he would continue living.

harold finding out that jude died, and the way that he did it.

Hauntingly beautiful and seriously messed up. I loved the characters and the way the author writes makes them seem so real and human. However, definitely wouldn't recommend to anyone just because of how horrific some of the events that happen and I think I included about half of the content warnings?

Beautifully devastating. This book will crush your heart to pieces with each unnecessary apology or
swipe of a razor blade
yet it is still heartwarmingly radiant of love at some parts . It is masterfully written and immersive although slow paced. Please check content warnings before reading. This book has honestly changed my life
