What a good time this book was! I'm so amazed that it was a debut novel haha some people are just too talented. (And also too cool?? Ms. Simon's career history is so heckin' impressive.) I loved the relationships in this family between these very different and complex women. I also really really enjoyed having a kind of disabled sleuth! I loved Nancy Drew back in the day, but there was the running joke that she was knocked out all over the place and just totally okay an hour later. It's not very human. I can't wait to read more from this author.

A murder mystery with a strong older female protagonist. Lana is a high-powered LA real-estate developer that is forced to relocate to rural Northern California after receiving a cancer diagnosis. To occupy her time, she becomes an amateur sleuth after the body of a land trust worker is found by her granddaughter. Her sleuthing annoys the homicide detectives leading the case.  As Lana's list of suspects grows, it reveals family secrets; land disputes; and lies.

The writing style allows the novel to be a pace that's not too slow but not too fast.  The inspiration for the title is brief and could be missed.  The land trust fire and the final barn scene were dramatic. Lana's quote about not letting others make you feel small as you age stands out.
