The Getaway God by Richard Kadrey

While I have thoroughly enjoyed the other books in the series, it has started to feel a little tired as the series has gone on. This culminated in The Getaway God which while still readable seemed to lose a lot of the pieces that made the previous tales so enjoyable.

Lots of fun. Nice wrap-up. Lots of highly entertaining profanity as always.

I love this series and I was wondering where Kadrey could go because it all seems to be getting out of hand for Stark (as usual) but Kadrey pulls it out of the bag and this is another great book in the Sandman Slim series- my favourite for the last few books I think!

One thing- I didn't reread the rest of the series before I read this one and I wish I had- it's getting a bit confusing with all the different creatures and there were 3 or 4 occasions when I was like "I've forgotten what lurkers are" I still enjoyed the book a lot but I think I could have enjoyed it even more!

Edit: I reread the whole series for the release of [b:Killing Pretty|23315850|Killing Pretty|Richard Kadrey|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1421708979s/23315850.jpg|42756265] and it was brilliant. This book really is the end of one story arc and rereading definitely helped pull it all together.

Probably 3.5. The schtick of the series was getting a bit old, so I am heartened by how things ended.

Readers of the series will like this book. It wasn't my favorite of the series, but it was a nice way to introduce some new(ish) characters and recycle some of the old ones. This book closed a lot of open story arcs and literally closed some doors too.

The setting is a dark urban fantasy where the lines between Heaven, Hell, and earth are blurred (at best), and too familiar for comfort. Even after six books the story stays fresh and the characters continue to grow. Stark -- Sandman Slim, is a no-nonsense bruiser. part hitman, part detective, part outlaw.

It is both enjoyable and quick. Very fast-paced and no long boring lulls. Even when the author "reminds" you of relevant events from other books, it doesn't feel forced or like he is beating you over the head with it... He has plenty of other options if he wanted to beat you over the head. lol

I like these books, but I think that they make less and less sense as they go on. But that doesn't stop me from reading them and loving them.

This book feels like a drop in quality for me. While we still get the typical Stark badassery, there isn't that much development character-wise, even though significant events happen here. The book also does something that I absolutely despise in any book, and it's just tiring and lacks creativity, in my opinion. Plus, the resolution wraps up fairly quickly, especially for how large in scale the conflict is built up. I don't think this will be the end of it, and we'll see what happens in the future. I'm invested enough to where I will keep reading more.
