Hard to grasp, somehow, which I suspect was the point of it.

The story had potential but the writing style just wasn't for me

oh god this was so boring

A book that is absolutely worth reading to the very end even if it takes a while to get interested, because it’s the last scene itself that draws everything together.

The Last September by Elizabeth Bowen is a book I chose to read after becoming aware of the author through a tv programme about Doneraile Court, her home Bowens Court being a similar building not far away. The book itself, it was hard going, it's quite over descriptive and I felt like nothing in particular was happening throughout. Maybe if you're a fan of Jane Austen and that kind of style, it might be more to your taste, to me it felt like something I was made to read in school, not for enjoyment.

“But the wind like a lunatic fidgeted with the hut, frames creaked, doors rattled, a shudder went down the walls; a gust through a crack set the lights dementedly swinging. During a strained little silence, between two laughs of the wind, Mrs. Vermont observed that an angel must be passing over the house; she asked them to listen for its wings. They listened; they thought of the empty country blotted out by the darkness”

I really enjoyed this book. A very unusual perspective of the Anglo Irish, and their life that merges both as Irish and English, and identity not clearly defined. I found the love story very interesting, and how Gerard loves her but Lois is unsure of her feelings. At times this book felt too long and pacing too slow. Wished more development had occurred with Laurence. Overall enjoyable book, ending slightly flat, style beautiful but a bit too stilted at times
