Interesting premise. It was controversial in the 1960s and now it's controversial for those reasons and more. I think some characters are meant to be endearing or empowered but there's a pretty steady sprinkling of casual sexism, racism, and homophobia.
Very dialog heavy and some of it doesn't come across as clever as it was meant to in the 60s. Other parts are as relevant as ever.
It was slow to get through. I'm glad I read it but would find it hard to recommend unless you know exactly what you're signing up for.

nothing that hasnt been said before, but good god is this a chauvinistic circle jerk. the authors obvious self-insert 'jubal' makes this story completely insufferable. probably the only heinlein i'll bother to pick up.
