I watched the adaptation of this in middle school and the story always stuck with me. So when I came upon the physical book in a thrift store I couldn't say no. There's a lot of heart in the story of Herman, and you care for him through every step of his difficult journey. He's also quite the witty guy, which definitely helps bring some light in the thick of it all.
I will say that some of the language used is a bit dated and could be considered harmful, but it's not surprising as the book was published in the '80s.

Love how Saabye Christensen writes a childs mind and thoughts. The book also shows beautiful relationships within the characters. That being said, there's not really a lot going on.
