If you're a parentified child or Eldest African Daughter, this book is for you.

4.5 stars and I highly recommend the audiobook because hearing the characters in their proper accents was definitely a more immersive experience than in my inner-narrator voice.

4.5 but rounded up for the beautiful writing. Audiobook was fantastic. I was not thrilled with the ending but I loved learning about Maame and her family.

This one brought up a lot of feelings. Especially relatable for me was the tabu topic of mental health and the pressure to keep up a facade and to keep on functioning. I felt a lot of female rage on her behalf. The book was moving, tragic and hopeful and I’m so proud of Maddie for growing the way she did as if I knew her in real life.

I loved this book. I wish I'd read a physical copy because of all the beautiful prose that would be highlighted and all the annotations I'd have made. I'll be swiftly remedying that on my next trip to the bookshop. That being said, Heather Agyepong's narration was absolutely without fault.

This is a true coming of age story. Maddie's journey, from cover to cover, was so like my own in many ways; it felt so realistic. The amount of emotion packed into Jessica George's writing is impossible to miss. I appreciated all the different aspects of Maddie's life that we see: her role as caretaker to her ailing father, the absence of her brother and mother, her friendships, dating life, religion...everything! And yet I never felt overwhelmed by the information. I loved the meaning that is strung throughout the novel by the name "Maame", how it surfaces at pivotal moments, carrying with it Maddie's development as a character. George's writing felt balanced and familiar, the storytelling never missed a beat. It would be my great pleasure to read more from her.
