Well, that was a fun ride. Fred's grandmother dies and he sets off across the UK to Wales with his two best pals to find the biological dad he has never known. The boys set in motion a series of not-quite-miraculous but pretty unbelievable events. A book about what makes a family, how to support a friend in need, and serendipity.

This book had me laughing out loud at all the hilarious situations Freddie and his two best friends get into after their last day in year 6. There are plenty of teasers of the unpredictable (funny!) things to come that motivate you to keep reading (and make it very hard to stop) as the three boys travel to St Davids, Wales, to try and find Freddie’s biological Dad. Onion eating competitions, scarecrows dressed as superheroes, and miracle sheep all make an appearance as well as reminders of what it means to be a family; it’s not the blood in our veins, it’s the love in our hearts. This is a great choice if you like funny books.

Honestly this book surprised me, I think it’s a great option to try to teach the younger generations about deep topics such as death or mental health without being too analytical. All of Jenny Pearson’s books focus on a human issue, but tries to do it in a more sympathetic way.

Tyypillinen, noin 9- vuotiaista ylöspäin suunnattu kohellustarina, jossa Freddie ystävineen lähtee etsimään Walesista Freddien biologista isää. Hyvin suunniteltu on puoliksi tehty ja koska pojat eivät juurikaan suunnitelleet matkaansa etukäteen, sattuu reissussa kaikenlaista. Lopulta vanhemmilta salassa tehty reissu päätyy uutisiin asti. Turhanpäiten matkaa ei kuitenkaan tehty, sillä superihmeellinen seikkailu opettaa Freddielle kavereineen tärkeitä asioita perheestä.

Meillä pojat kyllä tykkäsivät tästä ja Freddien sekä hänen kavereidensa edesottamukset naurattivat kovasti. Juuri sellaista huumorilla höystettyä kirjallisuudenlajia, joka innostaa meidän poikia kirjojen pariin.

Freddie asuu yhdessä isänsä (oikeammin isäpuolensa) ja mumminsa kanssa. Kesäloma kolkuttaa ovella, mutta Freddien kesästä uhkaa tulla tylsä sillä isä on katkaissut jalkansa eikä pääse liikkumaan ja Freddien parhaat kaverit Charlie ja Ben ovat lähdössä loman alkupuolella matkoille perheidensä kanssa. Lisäksi Freddien mummo kuolee heti kesäloman aluksi, joten loma muuttuu entistä synkemmäksi. Mummo jättää kuitenkin jälkeensä kirjeen, jossa hän paljastaa Freddielle tämän oikean isän nimen: Alan Froggley. Samalta istumalta Freddie päättää etsiä Alanin käsiinsä ja värvää mukaansa kaverinsa, jotka tahoillaan tahtovat välttää perheidensä lomasuunnitelmat. Alkaa eeppinen seikkailu kohti Walesia, josta muodostuukin aivan odottamaton seikkailu.

Tarina on ihan hauska, mutta lievästi ylipitkä ja osa vitseistä alkaa maistua puulta lievän toiston jälkeen. Sinne tänne ripotellut kuvitukset antavat tarinalle eloa. Kokonaisuutena ihan ok kirja, joka kärsii lievästä ylipituudesta ja osittaisesta saman vitsin kierrätyksestä. 3 tähteä.

Well Freddie Yates loves facts and likes adventures.
Freddie’s journey with his two best friends is not what you could call smooth. This journey is supposed to stay secret but would you call being on television and walking around in supergirl costumes staying secret? 

Well I don’t know about that I loved this book!
