I really tried hard to like this book. I like ghosts that help. I like music, I just found so many of the main character’s choices to be bizarre and illogical. If you lose your luggage in a foreign country, do you apply for a teaching job using just your passport? If you only have 100€ to your name, do you pay €85 to a psychic you don’t believe in (and that didn’t move the story forward at all). If you see kids in a fight in your classroom, do you physically assault them in holds that hurt them? Do you pinch their ears? This book is set in fairly modern times and I cannot see anyone acting like this main character. She is likable, but very stupid acting. Also, if there are two AMAZING violinists, why have they lost the competition? How many times do we have to hear about the competition? Just too much for me. I’m going back to Three Pines with Louise Penny instead.

It was like reading Wild Mountain Thyme
lighthearted mysterious medium-paced

It's not often that you have a black female protagonist in a cozy mystery, so right off the bat this is not your usual mystery. Throw in the fact that she's a world class musician, stranded in Ireland, loves her bourbon, and is wicked smart and you've got a really entertaining story. Oh yeah, there's a ghost too. Definitely will read the next in the series.

Murder in G Major

Fun, cozy mystery. Gethsemane Brown, classical musician and maestra, ends up stranded in small town Ireland with a job as conductor and music teacher for a boys school. On the plus side, she's staying at the house of a famous composer. On the down side, he's presumed to have murdered his wife and committed suicide...and he's now haunting his house. But Eamon convinces Gethsemane that he is in fact innocent and asks for her help proving this.

Gethsemane is delightful. She's smart and amusing. It's fantastic to read a cozy mystery with a black protagonist. But the plot seemed all over the place. I guessed who the murderer was and the motive fairly early on. The sheer body count was absurd. Plus, as fun as the ghost stuff was...it was also not my cup of tea.
