Murder in G Major

Read for the 2018 Book Riot Read Harder Challenge, for the category "A mystery by a person of color or LGBTQ+ author."

This cozy mystery is a solid debut novel. I thought the small-town Irish characters were well done, and the suspense was very good. I liked the ghost! This would be a great TV series, I would totally watch it. There's not a wide range of emotion here, mostly Gethsemane is being headstrong. I think a wider range of emotion would make her feel more real, instead of relying on banter. BUT the banter is good. I also wish she could find a female friend, there are way too many dudes in the picture...and all the women in town are NUTS. 3.5 stars.

I listened to the audiobook and WOW that's how you pronounce Gethsemane, huh? Good to know. The reader did the loveliest voice and accent for Eamon. Her American accent was decent except for the word orchestra, which Gethsemane pronounces "awkestra".... that word is in this book a lot, so it's kind of funny. It didn't really bother me.

A ghost mystery set in Ireland, how fun.

A fairly interesting premise, but as the body count starts to stack up, the thing creaks and starts to fall apart,
The mix of Irishisms and Americanisms jars a bit.
The protagonist is a strong character but everyone else is pasteboard.
I’ve tried cosy mysteries but they just aren’t for me.

Finally had time for the first of the Gethsemane Brown Mysteries! This was a good one, if I didn't spoil myself by reading the fourth one first. I was still second guessing my memory by the time the confrontation happens. As I say it's all in execution, not the information. And the exaction of the story is great you can kind of understand way the true killer was overlooked for so long. My theory is Eamon knew the whole time and just refused to see it because of who he is. I'm definitely continuing with this series. And fun fact: this series is being adapted into hallmark movies under the name The Haunted Harmonies, a much better series name.

Excellent debut, worthy of all the nominations and awards it garnered. What's so fun about this book is how it takes many of the standard elements of a cozy and combines them in a new and delightful way. Feisty heroine. Afro-American classical musician. Ireland. Cottage with a ghost. Ghost who wants his name cleared. All this told in a witty manner where even the lesser characters have quirks and foibles. Just a lot of fun!

A good ghost story and mystery with a likeable, competent main character. I'm curious to read the next book in the series, since this book ends on a decidedly unfinished note (pun!) but yet doesn't seem to leave enough for another book.
