I forgot how fast of a read the first book is! Obviously the best part is Lee Jordan’s commentary of the Quidditch match 😂

i've never really gotten into HP as a kid, and every time the movies would come on, i'd go ahead and watch something else. about 2 yrs ago, i've watched the film adaptations in order and i LOVED it. it was a delight.

so, why not read the series? and it's actually really nice to see how faithful the film was to the book. i can see every single scene play out in my head, just like in the movies.

but i admit, i kind of struggled to read it in one sitting. it doesn't capture my attention that much (until the latter part), probably because i'm grown up now, lol.

As someone who wasn't allowed to read the books or watch the movies. This has been a joy reading I watched some of the movies last year for the first time and decided it was time to read the books. I am enjoying what I missed out on in childhood. I love the friendship between the group. Harry getting to experience the feeling of family. I'm just overall excited to read this series.

Just reread this, and jeeeez. I only gave it 4 stars before because I was an idiot. Updated to the 5 stars it deserves. I think I rated it 4 stars on the first read through because it's definitely written for a young audience, and it so closely matched the movie that I was expecting more.

But. There was so much more.

Coming back 15 years later, after having read all of them previously, and after having written my own novels, I have such a deeper appreciation for everything about this book.

Firstly, it was written for a young audience and it stayed true to that, but it also deals with several complex issues. Grief, loss, depression, disappointment... Maybe it's because I now see the foreshadowing clearer, but my heart leapt several times at how well the characters are crafted, and how accurately Rowling guides the reader to root for (or despise) each of them. Even--or perhaps especially--non-main characters. There's so much more depth there than I think I allowed myself to see before, because I was literally forced to read it by my friends (and it wasn't until book 3 that I was a Potterhead).

Secondly, as a writer, this time I read it as a student. The pacing and flow are perfect. We are truly on a journey with Harry, and the story pulls us along rather than having to chase it. It's never so fast that we have the least bit of confusion, nor is it ever so slow that it drags. Hurdles and successes are peppered wonderfully, so that it's never too heavy nor patronizing.

Rowling is a master.
