Dating the Defensive Back is part of the Nash Brothers series, but it can be read as a standalone.

Ava has always had a crush on her older brother’s
best friend. And when she hears he’s going to be playing for the Vegas Aces, in her city, she’s hoping to run into him and finally have her chance.

Grayson and Ava definitely had attraction to each other. Well, Ava knew who Grayson was but he didn’t recognize her.

There was a lot of drama because Grayson just didn’t trust Ava. He was also very loyal to her brother, his best friend, so she was “off limits.”And yet, he was still protective (and possessive) of Ava.

This was a fun read, and it had quite a bit of angst (though I feel like previous books have had more). There was also strong friendships and found family, which I loved. I really enjoyed this and look forward to the next book.

please note that the trigger warnings and topes/themes may contain spoilers
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
HEA: yes
POV: dual 1st person POV
spice: several open-door spicy scenes
TWs: abandonment, anxiety, death of a parent (recounted), depression, divorce, mentions of miscarriage
standalone: interconnected standalones
final thoughts: I love Lisa Suzanne’s pacing and writing style and I love that this is a standalone so there’s no cliffhanger

pretty good

Ava is feisty and I like how she shows her independence and stands her ground. Gray is a classic commitment phobe and it was kinda predictable but the story was good and the spice was good.

This was a very sweet read, though it was frustrating at times. Both MCs were so mature, but very childish throughout the whole book. It was fun to see them mature in ways they themselves didn't expect. I also did like that this story was one book instead of several short ones.

Ava Maxwell has had a crush on Grayson Nash since she was 11. Trying to get this attention through lifting weights in their family gym. Now about a decade later, she is fed up with her boyfriend and is freshly single and Grayson is in town, it's her perfect opportunity to make her dreams coke true! Honestly Ava is the type of manipulative I aspire to be! She's a genius in her ways of keeping herself in Grayson's life and I was taking notes!

To be completely honest I went into this book with the thought that I wasn't going to like Grayson, due to how I saw him in The Coach series. To say the least Grayson surprised me. He was very different than the confident Grayson we saw in previous books. We got more insight on how his relationship with his father was almost as bad as his brother's. It was nice to see that even adults get effected by their parents getting divorced. Grayson was so scared that he'd hurt Ava & 40+ years it would all be for nothing. Thank God his mother talked some sense into him, but he was still an idiot. I loved that he groveled! And that last gesture! Chef's kiss!

I can't wait for Spencer's story! I don't know what happened to Poor Spencer, but he didn't deserve whatever happened to him!

Also I hope we get Austin's story! The foreshadowing of his book had me excited!

Returning to the beloved Vegas Aces world is always a treat. After all, that is where I fell in love with Lisa Suzanne's writing. After a season with the new coach, Lincoln Nash, it's time for the stories of younger and new players, now including two of his brothers.

Dating the Defensive Back is Grayson Nash's story. Grayson signs with the Vegas Aces in what he believes could be his last year. On his first night out with his teammates, he is instantly smitten with a gorgeous woman who walks into the bar.

Ava Maxwell knows Grayson. They go way back, as he is her oldest brother's best friend from high school and the guy she crushed on while growing up. As Grayson approaches and tries the worst and most cliche pick-up lines, Ava realizes he doesn't recognize her. 10 years have passed since they last saw each other. But why would she refuse a night with Grayson?

When he learns who she is, he is pissed. He refuses to further break his promise to Ava's brother of looking out for her. Until a photo of them gets leaked by Ava's ex, and they decide to get into a fake relationship to keep the media at bay. Do you want to guess who Grayson's publicist ends up being? Good old Ellie, who has a blast with these two.

There is no denying Grayson and Ava are combustible together. Their chemistry is some of the best Lisa Suzanne's has ever written. She fits in with the Nashes so well. You have to love these two (minus when they don't communicate for the littlest things).

I'm excited about the rest of this new series! Because the Nashes are here to stay and further shake the Aces a bit.

I ended up not finishing this. I generally love sports tropes, but I didn't like how the main female character came across as a "jersey chaser". I didn't enjoy it, so called it quits.

Saw a TikTok about it, ran to download, read the whole thing, didn’t reaaally love it.

Maybe the writing style just wasn’t for me?
