This is the best book of the year. I'll be shocked if it doesn't get the Newbery.

Melancholy, but touching and beautiful. Great book!

A bit heavy handed family drama about loss. I think it was a bit too dark for its intended audience

Powerful, heartbreaking, beautifully written.
Middle grade novel, love of animals, grief, empathy.

Perfectly on key from start to finish, and I can’t imagine a better narrator for the audio version. This is one of those soulful stories for kids that hits you head on with some really tough stuff (read: lots of deaths for a children’s book) but then pays off in a shower of glittering literary sparks so bright they linger even after you close your eyes. Gorgeous and restrained and meaty and intimate and sad and satisfying. My kids loved it too. 🦊

This is a strange book. Maybe for kids who love nature? But it's sad and mystical, too--that's a very specific audience!

Second read. Just as heart wrenching and beautiful as the first time.

I couldn't put this book down! It has everything I love in a good story - compelling relationships, animals, whimsy, magic, and emotional tugging of my heartstrings. I cried for a solid 10 minutes after I finished this book; probably the best book I read in 2016.

A deeply moving story of love tragedy and loss that is beautifully written. The intense emotional subject matter and the very relatable way in which it is written I think could be a bit much for young readers. Like Pax, I feel this is a story written more for adults but written with children and animals as main characters. I can't see myself recommending this book to children. If you are an adult or teen that loves a good cry and books about death, then this is the book for you.
