Actual conversation between Wanda and I:

Please note that I'm only vaguely familiar with what goes on in the Marvel comic books so I have little idea of what happened before or after House of M.

I'm usually all for what-if stories but they can come across as having low stakes, since we assume that eventually everything will be put back the way it was after (you know, they wake up and it was all a dream). I think House of M found a great way to avoid this by making the stakes personal: you just got everything you ever wanted in the alternative world – are you sure you want to go back? But what about the relationships you left behind in the previous world?

Peter's arc in House of M really sells this: he's lost MJ, but to do the right thing he will have to lose Gwen AGAIN, Ben AGAIN, and lose a son, AND he has seen proof that he was holding MJ's career back. He starts House of M arguing against killing Wanda, then is so enraged by it all that he is willing to kill her and her family himself.

Overall, what a great story!

Dumb comments for your amusement:
* When we first see Beast arriving with the X-men, honestly I felt so bad that they put him in that costume. Surely that would chafe with the fur.
* During the discussion at the start about what to do about Wanda, there's a frame where Captain America is standing next to Emma and says “Avengers?” Look. At. His. Broken. Legs.
* The casual conversation between alternative Emma and Scott: so at least half the Fantastic Four are dead.
* We first see alternative Carol taking out the Gambit trash.
* Basically everything is Magneto's fault in the end. Father of the Year.

Still remains as one of the crossovers that stand out in the Marvel Universe.

4.5/5 ⭐️

This comic collection was suggested to me by a friend who understands my love for Wanda Maximoff. He knew that this collection would stop just short of breaking my heart, and he was right. Wanda's pain is terrible, spreading to those around her as they suffer for her and because of her.

My friend also warned me that Wanda was over-powered in this collection and I tend to agree...which is why I gave it three stars. I dislike when superheroes have so many powers that they are essentially God, because it makes a decent story hard to tell. How do you defeat someone who is omnipotent? Marvel was rather handy with the ending of volume 8, but it didn't quite make me feel any better about Wanda's over the top abilities.

If you don't have my particular hang-up about this, however, and you like the Maximoffs, I strongly suggest reading this collection. Some research indications that "Decimation" comes next, followed by "Messiah CompleX", though if I am wrong I wouldn't mind a comment lettering me the proper order!
