A bit outside of my normal reading zone, David Goggins Can't Hurt Me was recommended by a young person I admire and is in the hands of boys and men across the country (and beyond, I'm guessing). It's uber-macho and celebrates the author's ability to push through the human body's superficial limits.
One idea that is sticking with me, based as far as I can tell on pure gut feeling, is that when we think we are at our max, we've only given 40%. I've honestly felt myself using that to push ahead when I come up against physical and mental barriers - so, yeah, I can see why this is inspiring. It's worth considering, especially in the context of RIGHT NOW, why military heroism, masochistic self-punishment (redundant, right?), and blind, raging competitiveness are so compelling. Please let me know if you find the answer.
Recommended reading for people interested in exploring America and our problem with boys and men, not excluding myself, a sports junkie who is driven more by competition than I like to admit.

I keep coming back to this book everytime I need to get my life together. It can definitely come off as harsh and intense but to me it's always a push in the right direction.Being able to hear someone else's story that is also full of struggle and not only persevere, but also use it to exceed beyond what's expected of them is so inspiring and serves as a hopeful reminder that no one is truly a lost cost. The interactive journal prompts help me reflect on my actions/habits,possible reasonings for that behavior and take full accountability. I use this book as a crutch to get back on a routine aligned with my goals and alter it accordingly. There's some heavy topics in there so I'd say be mindful of that.

Can't Hurt Me: Master Your Mind and Defy the Odds is an intense, raw, and inspiring memoir that takes readers through the unbelievable journey of a man who overcame extreme adversity to become one of the toughest individuals alive. Goggins’ story is nothing short of extraordinary, as he shares his battles with childhood trauma, racism, and physical limitations, ultimately using those struggles as fuel to push himself beyond what most of us would consider possible.
The book is more than just a memoir—it’s a powerful guide to mastering your mind, facing discomfort, and unlocking your full potential. Goggins reveals his “40% rule,” which suggests that when your mind tells you you’re done, you’ve only reached 40% of your true capacity. This mindset is central to the book and encourages readers to push past their mental barriers, break free from limiting beliefs, and achieve greatness.
What makes this book stand out is Goggins’ honesty and unrelenting determination. His no-excuses approach is both motivating and tough-love in nature. While the stories of physical endurance—such as his time as a Navy SEAL and ultramarathon runner—are awe-inspiring, it’s Goggins’ mental strength and refusal to quit that really shine. He pushes you to confront your own excuses and limitations, making you realize that the biggest obstacle in your life is often your own mind.
Can't Hurt Me is not for the faint of heart; it’s a book that will challenge you, make you uncomfortable, and inspire you to push beyond what you thought you were capable of. If you’re looking for a book that’ll motivate you to change your mindset and take your life to the next level, this is it. Goggins’ story is a testament to the power of resilience, and it will leave you ready to face any challenge head-on.

Very militaristic view on what to do and not to do. Some parts of the book I was only waiting for the "that's what alpha-males do" retoric.
I REALLY liked the chapter on leadership. Very inspiring!
