inspiring

David Goggins sounds like a really mad soccer coach who yells at your ears in the half time for motivation. In the first few pages I sensed a little turned off at the slight narcissistic tone and also the dark first chapter. But once I persevered into the second chapter, the life of David Goggins is such a movie.

Though its a motivational book, I wouldn’t see it that way. Obviously there are a lot of motivational self improvement techniques there. To point out, things like the 40% rule, path of most resistance, governor, cookie jar, calloused mind are such wonderful ideas.

But personally I don’t derive self motivation from those techniques. For me its in the stories, stories of the achievements on underdogs through perseverance. Goggins’ story is one such wonderful story. He came out of nowhere, he fought against his own tainted childhood, obesity, physical limitations. He broke out all those and belted so many achievements. That is the story which would motivate me. That is my takeaway from this book.

He has a good story. I found it interesting how he achieved everything he did and where he came from. His accomplishments are impressive and I think the overall message was intended to be good, but done poorly. His talk of overcoming the mind is repetitive and he comes across as arrogant in many ways even though he states otherwise.

He consistently uses himself as an example for how to push past your limits to achieve your goals, but he does this by destroying his body and possibly his mind too. He gives examples that show he isolated himself and his relationships suffered because of this. He is a rare case where these have all worked out for him, but using his experiences to describe hard work and perseverance doesn’t provide a guide for people to follow like he claims. His ‘advice’ or ‘challenges’ could be harmful to people.

Goggins leaves you with an overall inspiring message that hardships will certainly plague everyone's life, but we each have a choice when we wake up to either let that crush us or motivate us to become our best selves. It may be painful and an ongoing struggle; however, it will be worth it every day to try to push yourself just an ounce harder and achieve success.
