This is a book I’ll want to read again. Working in the energy field, I’m fascinated by the push/pull of the ethics where consumerism and environmentalism meet. I’m also moved by the strength and resilience of the human spirit and our glorious but burdened planet. This book hit the spot for me.
Graphic: Abandonment, Confinement, Fire/Fire injury, Grief, Racism, Panic attacks/disorders, War, Bullying, Death, Pandemic/Epidemic, Gore, and Cancer

As far as environmental books go, this one was not that depressing :)
It seems like the book was written for two different readers: ones who want to read about the biggest Canadian fire, and once who want to read a book about the history of climate activism as that relates to fires. I belong to the latter, and therefore I enjoyed the second half of the book much more than the first.
The description of the fire itself felt to me at once under- and overwritten: not enough details of how the evacuation was conducted (apart from what a miracle it was, and by all means judging by how long they waited to require one, it really was) and too much waxing poetic.
The second half of the book has a lot of interesting information on the history of science on this topic, as well as history of other fires elsewhere. Some of it I was aware of, and some of it was new to me.
