FBI Brady Moore and Alicia Walker have the perfect case to test out their new Crime Scene device on--a serial murder who beheads his victims with an ax. While investigating, they begin to see how the case is more than it appears, it somehow ties into the victims all having had near death experiences. They travel to Italy and discover that the murders are part of a plot by a man who wants to be recognized as the Antichrist by a secret organization that has existed since the middle ages. They want the Antichrist to come and to share in his power--but now Alicia and Brady have gotten in their way and are now in terrible danger
The story shifts around from the good guys to the bad guys, and it takes a while to start to see how it all ties together. The author doesn't shy away from the blood and gore, and there is a lot of brutal violence. Plausibility is stretched, as in many stories that involve conspiracies, but it makes for a exciting tale. The characters are typical of the suspense genre, the bad guys have been fleshed out enough to make their motivations work. The existence of a top secret group that wants to see the Antichrist come and that is working with a bunch of Vikings works for the story but upon reflection seems unbelievable.
Excellent thriller, for those that don't mind blood and gore and are into conspiracies.

"What we all yearned for, Alicia decided, was a love so deep it could never reach the surface again."

Wow. I would give this five stars, but the ending was horrible. Honestly. I was expecting a huge, climactic battle, but it seemed like the author couldn't think of a good ending, so he just threw in something and hoped for the best. However, the other 98% of the book was great! I loved the way the plot came together just before the end. Some parts were kinda gross, (like where the FBI agent gets her arm filleted, graphically described) but somehow that just made the book cooler. All in all, much better than his other book, germ. I loved it!

I really wanted to like this book. Good ideas and an interesting plot, but there was something missing. I don't know what it was, but I just wasn't excited reading this book, more relieved when it was over.

Nebyť toho konca tak by som tomu dala aj štyri hviezdičky. Páčili sa mi postavy, bolo to napínavé, sem tam som mala pocit, že sa to zbytočne naťahuje. Teda za mňa 3,5 *
