I was apprehensive going into this because I hold Heartless Hunter in such high regard. However, Rebel Witch was just as scrumptious as the first book. Initially, I felt the world building was going to the wayside, but there were narrative seeds planted along the way that made the conclusion feel well-earned. The banter had me kicking my feet, but the deeper connection with Rune and Gideon was truly moving.

I hate to be writing this but I DNF'ed at 75%. The Crimson Moth was one of my YA highlights last year but the sequel left me so disappointed. It's a constant back and forth of Rune getting kidnapped, Gideon getting kidnapped, one of them betrays the other but not really, another kidnapping...

Also, I think one of my main issues is that both the humans and the witches seem like horrible people and they've done horrid things to eachother, it's hard to root for any of them.

fast paced just like the last one, but this time in a weird sense where sometimes it felt right and sometimes there were plot points and moments that needed to be dragged out just a tad bit more. there were also two supposedly big twists and reveals that i fear were quite predictable and didn't really hit as hard as it should've, and there were a few supporting characters that just felt thrown into the story for convenience with very little build up. i did like that gideon and rune sorta formed this unexpected rebel group dynamic that really stuck by them til the end and so on.

all in all, these were very small critiques that i was able to look past. i was very excited for this book and it didn't let me down at all. still consider it a good wrap up to the story. 4.5 stars.

this was a satisfying follow up to Heartless Hunter/The Crimson Moth. I felt much more invested in the romance (and it succeeding) in this book for various reasons, and I think it was because of generally improved writing for the two main characters overall. you can absolutely see where the story will inevitably conclude but it's still a good read that keeps you in, whereas I think there was so much setup and "who can outwit the other more" in the first book that the pacing kind of dragged.

I loved the first and I loved this one!!! SOOOO GOOD. Characters are believable and loveable. There’s growth. The plot is fun and moves. It has ALL the tropes. Second chance, one bed, “who did this to you”, it’s all there.

I so so so so so appreciated the exploration of imagining how the world could be, believing how it could be, and fighting for it.

Really enjoyed this duology.
