Probably the first classic literature I truly enjoyed. Unlike other classics I’ve read so far (which to be fair is very very few), this one is driven by palpable tension between the main characters. This tension was set right from the first chapter and it has driven the entire novel.
It was sad that in the end, even though they were both free to pursue each other or at least enjoy each other’s companionship, they have already settled in their own ways and convictions.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, it’s incredibly easy to read (for classic literature), characters who are all less than perfect, the age old question of whether you should sacrifice your own happiness in lieu of others.
Set in the gilded age when Wharton herself was a debutant, you can feel in her writing both the distain she has for the period but also the reverence. The book is at times satirical and a lot of the time witty!
I will 💯 be reading more of her work! Highly recommend

The ending of this book is absolutely devastating.

Inizio col dire che non voglio passare per una esperta letteraria essendo un classico, appunto, della letteratura, non ne ho la facoltà, ma non mi risparmierò per questo.
Quello che mi è subito balzato all'occhio è che mi è sembrato una sorta di "Il piacere" di Gabriele D'Annunzio ma fatto male.
Sempre le stesse scene che si ripetono ogni volta: lui che deve andare a prenderla a destra e sinistra; lui che deve accompagnarla di qua e di là, perché, ovviamente, nessun altro può andarci, poiché tutti impegnati; e tutti i vari viaggi che fa per seguirla.. ma basta! Dopo la terza volta diventa monotono, noioso e stressante.
Personaggi piatti che non fanno altro che lamentarsi "Su quanto amaramente ingiusta è stata la vostra vita." Cit.
Archer, personaggio super falso che disprezza la società in cui vive per la monotonia delle persone e delle abitudini, l'importanza che danno alla reputazione, e poi, lui stesso, si comporta da ipocrita sposando una donna che non ama, soltanto per salvaguardare le apparenze, la reputazione definendolo "dovere ineluttabile", per poi ammorbarci per tutto il romanzo di pensieri su di Ellen, delle scuse che trova per vederla e dei finti viaggi di affari solo per seguire lei..
