Another thoroughly fun adventure from Buroker, with her kitchen sink world building that works, I think, because of the overriding sense of sheer fun.
Yanko is eighteen and his family expects him to recoup their slide from prestige into respect again (in spite of his notorious pirate mother who decamped years ago) by becoming a warrior mage. But fate has other plans.
Soon he, and Lakeo, a young woman from his uncle's mines, find themselves propelled into adventure, driven by a mysterious letter from Yanko's friend, the Nurian prince. Characters from the Emperor's Edge books turn up, we have lots of Buroker's wonderful banter, and a host of interesting characters. Looking forward to the next!

I read this several years ago and had forgotten about it. I stalled out somewhere in book 2 and never finished the series, but decided to come back and give it another shot (mainly because I was looking for something that I could listen to during workouts that I didn't have to think too hard about).
Our protagonist, Yanko, is the last of his family born with magic, and with that carries the overwhelming weight of his family's expectation that he will be the one to restore their honor after his mother has turned pirate against the empire. After narrowly failing his entrance exam into Stargrind (a school to train warrior mages) , Yanko returns to work at the family's salt mine. After the mine is attacked and overrun with rebels, he ends up on a quest to find an artifact that will help his struggling nation, but he's not the only one in pursuit of the artifact. Pursued by warrior mages and mage hunters, will Yanko and his friends be able to complete their quest?
Yanko's honesty and integrity combined with his sweetness and innocence, all wrapped up in a healthy dose of awkwardness make him one of the most endearing characters I've encountered. You feel empathy for him, shake your head and groan at him, laugh at his self-deprecating humor ... in short, he's the classic "nice guy". Daniel Henning really hit the mark as Yanko in the narration. The supporting characters are varied and interesting as well.
The story itself is interesting, if a little unbelievable at times, but it's entertaining. Lindsay Buroker books have a tendency to build throughout the series, so I'm sure that some of the things that I'm not so sure about after this book, will be developed as the series progresses. I'm giving it a 3.75 because it was an entertaining and lighthearted read. But clearly it didn't stick with me, as I didn't remember having finished it previously.

This author is so clever she did not disappoint in this book! This book was funny and thoughtful. I loved it!
I'm giving it a three, because it took me a while to get into the book. But I'm tempted to give the ending a four, because I truly do want to know what happens and the world seems rich and full of more story to tell. Will be back for the next book in the series.

Fantastic start to the series! All the characters are great. Yanko and Lakeo make for a good duo, with Lakeo keeping Yanko from being too much of an annoying teenage boy. Love seeing Dak again and personally, I find the addition of Kei the parrot hilarious.
another great series from [a:Lindsay Buroker|4512224|Lindsay Buroker|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1292869920p2/4512224.jpg]. only thing is it ends in a cliffhanger. so proceed with caution if you read this series.
same world as Emperor's Edge but only one character from this series and he didn't come into play until like book 8 in EE.
so this young man doesn't annoy me. the dragon series, [b:Dragon Storm|37539796|Dragon Storm (Heritage of Power, #1)|Lindsay Buroker|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1513308832s/37539796.jpg|59141819], Heritage of Power. those young folks annoyed me so much.
yanko is insecure and talks to himself a lot but he isn't annoying. i think may be because of how humble and polite he is. i dunno. i enjoyed watching him learn new skills and discover he could be badass. i enjoyed his moments of self doubt and when he blushed. i like his entourage, especially Dak.
as always lots of fun, lots of adventure, some scifi/fantasy, and a lil romance.
buy the books. read the books. love the books. get mad they end in a cliffhanger.

This book was given to me for my honest review.
This was set in the Emperors Edge world ( If you haven’t read that pick it up FANTASTIC series!!) Also it has to do with the characters from the Salt and the Sword series that she wrote and it has mentionings and appearances of other characters from other books set in the same world.
Warrior Mage can be read as a stand alone though.
We are introduced ( or reintroduced ) to Yanko a modest young man who at the beginning is taking his warrior mage entrance exam for a school. He has talent but towards the end of his exam he decides to show off and well ends up back in the family salt mines. While in the salt mines a catastrophe happens and Yanko escapes with his friend to go back to his village in which he has found pillaged, scorched and the villagers as well as his father gone. He ends up finding his brother that is in the military and has with him a letter from a Prince Yanko befriended in the Salt and Sword series in which sets him off on a course of adventure and mayhem. He takes his friend a female by the name of Lakeo with him and a mysterious Turgonian named Dak who owed him a favor. He comes across his lost free spirited crush and some interesting cast of characters all while being chased by a mage hunter and a seriously angry Warrior Mage foe.
I loved this book ( To be completely honest I love practically all the books this author writes) Action! Adventure! Pirates! a Jailbreak! A Kraken! Mayhem! Warrior Mages! A False Bard! Young Precocious Twins! Assassins! Reclaiming Honor! (Seriously what is not to like about all that? and its not even everything that makes this book so wonderful!)
The book was wonderfully fast paced and as in all her books the plot was complex and interesting. The characters were fun, smart and some of their pasts mysterious. Every time I had to sit it down I was looking forward to the moment I could pick it up and continue it. This book can be read as a stand alone. The ending is quite the cliffhanger!! I’m excited to continue this adventure with Yanko and his friends.
