I wanted to like this book because it's written by one of my favourite authors. However, I am biased against the protagonist so I can't like it. Other than that it was well-written and the plot was interesting if a bit light even for a short story.

I LOVE Lindsay Buroker's work so when she posted about this stand-alone short story, which she wrote about 10 years ago, I was somewhere between intrigued and "how about I drop everything and read this now".
As far as short stories go, this was okay. I enjoyed it. If you have some spare time, this is worth a quick read, especially for Lindsay Buroker's more avid fans. The character's were interesting and I certainly wouldn't complain if more was written in this universe, especially the backstory for this story's main character, Fortis.
However, and with absolutely no offense intended (can this be construed as an offensive statement?), Lindsay Buroker's writing has improved so much since this was written. This story's characters lack the depth that I have come to expect of each and every one of Buroker's characters, even those that are mentioned only a handful of times. She is a very talented author in regards to character depth, development, and interaction. For me, that's what makes her writing so enjoyable. The characters are unique and realistic, the kind of people you might like to hang out with. Also her stories are always funny and I love that! This one doesn't disappoint on that front.
Also, side note, Akari makes me think of Amaranthe a bit. And now I REALLY want the last Emperor's Edge book to be available. Like right now.
