Finished the book. Still have no idea when the story wil begin. It kept hinting at stuff but nowhere was there a story to be found.

Possibly the most pretentious writing style I've ever encountered. Unbearable.

Not really a fan. Generously gave it two stars because the writing is decent. But it really is a rambler and left me feeling like nothing happened, although something clearly did. The movie will be coming out soon and I'm curious if they'll make any changes to make it feel less like nothing.
Edited to add that another reviewer said it felt like something from M. Night Shamalan (think of his worst work) and I could not agree more!

Once the author started describing every single item the character bought at the grocery store for two paragraphs starting every sentence with "she bought" I knew I couldn't finish the book.

The story revolves around a family, who during a vacation gets to witness some strange events which are assumed to be caused by a mysterious type of war.
I usually like open ended books, but I felt that either the story or the cause could have been hinted to a direction. As it is, it just felt like a well written anxious dream devoid of logic.

Is this a 4 star or a 2 star book? It depends on when you ask me. Sometimes I hated it (anxiety speaking), but I haven't stopped thinking about it. A genre bending domestic fiction turned dystopian. Sometimes boring, but sometimes mind blowing and surprisingly deep. idk
