Magic Bites by lona Andrews is first in the Kate Daniels series.

Kate Daniels is a plucky mercenary who makes her moving fixing magic problems.

The story starts off with her guardian being murdered and of course she is raised with finding the perpetrators which leads her to a power struggle between two powerful factions. This is NOT a kids book and highly recommend listening to the audio.

I'm so confused about the glowing reviews this series continually gets. The first book was so stunningly average. I guess it must get better but... I don't see how this book has 8 billion ratings with a > 4 star average.
