First off, I’ve been wanting to read this book since 2013 and I almost didn’t make it to the end because of how gory some descriptions in the book were, my disinterest in/suspicion of some of the other characters and the plot was a investigator/mystery thriller genre that I’m not always into. I had also just read a twelve dancing princesses retelling and was somewhat shocked to be thrown into this world of bloodshed, swearing and violence. Not that I’m not used to these things or dislike them, but you can see how the experience could be jarring. I stuck around out of curiosity and I liked Kate’s trash talk, haha! It was cheesy, but I like that. In general, I liked Kate! I’m glad I read this book!
However, the men in this novel are questionable. I know Kate can hold her own, but when the potential love interest grabs her by the throat, I’m going to be suspicious of how the next books are going to go.
Overall, though, I did enjoy this novel and badass Kate! I’m probably going to read the next one tbh.

Reading Challenge Prompt: A romance.

This was fun! I like Kate a lot, even though she is a hot mess - to put it mildly. The writing wasn't excellent, but it was serviceable to the plot.

A solid introduction but the pacing was a little too stop and go. I absolutely love this unique take on an urban post-apocalyptic fantasy world. I mean shapeshifters, gods, drone-vampires and horse drawn carriages as the main transport !?!! Say no more!

My first graphic audio adaption and I really enjoyed it.

The world was kind of cool, but... it still left me at 'meh'...

-and I don't like when the book ends at 75%

Audiobook Narrated by
Renée Raudman
⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've read it before, but I wanted to check out the audio version.

I honestly don't remember what I scored it the first time around, and I am fully aware that a narrator can colour a book positively or negatively.

So 3 solid stars from me at this point

Totally fine series opener?

Things I liked:
-it was a totally fine murder mystery, some of the side characters are intriguing, the twist was good and it clicks on forward! Enough to want to read the next one!

Things I didn't:
-that certain flavor of "I hate/don't understand/am jealous of/am intrigued by other women"; would love to see some additional female characters who aren't the main (or dead bodies)

Neutral:
-i am hilariously overinvested in the logistics of magic/tech worlds where the cars stop working when the magic is up. the TRAFFIC PROBLEMS.
