I liked how fast paced this novel was, and the idea behind the world, but I don’t think it was executed very well. There was a lot of plot holes and jumping around and confusion surrounding pretty much everything, and I honestly just didn’t love the writing style. Also very gory and graphic. Very disappointed:(
i started this series because it had such high praises from so many sources. it started off a bit shaky for me because i was already skeptical. i was addicted in no time, but confused for a good percentage of the book. Kate vacillates between a wimpy girl afraid of her shadow to an uber strong super heroine and back again. there are so many vague hints to her past and her bloodline but no concrete answers. all in all i enjoyed the book, am half in love with curran (cute little golden eyed kitty :-) ) and am moving on to book two.
Took a while to get into it because i normally read fantasy in a more medieval setting. Nothing super special but enjoyable. The book was rather short so i felt like there wasn't much time to really get attached to the characters, so I wonder what the rest of the series will bring.

What I enjoyed: the world, the characters, the story! This story was dark and creepy but fascinating. What I didn’t enjoy: the pacing (slow start, didn’t really pick up til halfway), I had a really hard time following how things worked (I.e. magic system, tech v magic, when other types of magic come into play), Kate can be a little boring at times - it kinda goes with her character but sometimes it felt like she was letting things happen around her when it would have been in character for her to step in.
I thought I had issues with urban fantasy because sometimes the action bores me, but this was good. the fact that a character was named bono made me l-o-l and there is some very unique world building here. I was kind of slither (the movie) level grossed out by the main villain, and that's definitely a compliment. I will definitely be continuing with this series!
