Literally just trying to update before the new year, but yep, I'm four months behind on GR.

Original Review:
So, I've read a lot of urban fantasy. I've read even more first 50 pages of urban fantasy and gotten extremely offended at a lot of the tropes. The thing is, I don't hate on the genre. I mean, the tropes are staples of the genre, and if executed well, they shine. They glow within and outside of their genre.

This book did well. The setting is SO cool and even though the book lacks exposition, I'm used to being left in the dark for a bit until the authors get their bearings. The romance almost turned me off, but thank fuck Dr Crest was MEANT to be a red herring.

It's got to be Curran, right? He... not gonna lie, he's a bit much, but, little bits of character have me hoping he'll turn out to be a decent boyfriend under all the pomp. (the PEAS! the roof!) I mean, same for Kate tbh(she eggs him on, this is totally a argument to banter to love, plz?), the line about her playing the stereotype got me, I am intrigued.

The book did not commit the sin of having a heroine who was a "badass" and yet inexplicably turned into a damsel once the supernatural alpha man entered the story. The heroine also had more to her character than "badass", this is in large part due to the execution.

I'm intrigued by her mystery, though after a bit into book two, I can see now that this book is really, REALLY part of an arc, like...it doesn't go on its own. Much like reading only 100 pages into a 500 page book, you get a taste, but in order to cash in on the desert, you need to read on and have the full course meal.

Which I will, so props to it. Many urban fantasy series lose my interest. At the same time, having no way of knowing now if the promising start delivers or fizzles, I'm going to give it 3 stars. I liked it, and I am pumped, erring on the side of "this is gonna be fantastic". The only way to go is up!

Thanks Crystal.

One more revision would have put this book up to three stars. The potential is there but it could use a bit of tightening up. I will give the next in the series a try, though.

Interesting new world and characters. It took me a little while to catch on to how their world works. Besides awkwardly unnecessary profanity, it was a charming and good/quick read.

Fitted my bing-reading needs of a sassy independent woman and the supernatural. Liking the romance too, that it wasn't all over in the first book (even though I'm dying to see it play out!)

Awesome lead character, really interesting world building, realistic romance, but way, way too gory for my tastes. I finished this but likely won't read the rest of the series because the blood is just too much for me - I had nightmares about her vampires after reading this. I wish the gore was dialed back, because the world she's created is fascinating and I'd like to read more.
