DID NOT FINISH

Well, here's one that just is not for me. While I do enjoy myself some good gritty writing, there's a point between enjoyable and "too far." This just feels so much like the author was trying way too hard to be gritty and edgy. If the world itself is fleshed out and the characters/story interesting enough to balance things out, that's one thing, but it just felt like Andrews was throwing one supernatural thing after another at the reader with little to no explanation. I never did figure out when this was set, or what happened with the world, but honestly I didn't really care. The most clear it ever got was Bono being referred to as a singer from way back.

I don't know. I like the idea of the vampires being primitive, murderous creatures, but having them run around naked and the way to tell how old they are is based on how shriveled their scrotums are? "Well, gee, I think this guy's about 50, but let's flip him over and give a good long look at his balls to be safe."

What?

Good world-building. Good dialogue.

I didn't finish this at about halfway through, which is disappointing as I'd heard good things about this series. I'm not a big urban fantasy fan (though I love the Dresden Files), but not for lack of trying. I stopped reading because I just didn't CARE about any of these characters or even the mystery. There was a lot of posturing - it seemed like a bunch of supernatural people trying to prove who was the biggest, baddest person around. Kate is a badass woman (and that's great!), but what else is she? I didn't get anything else on her personality. I also didn't get a sense of the world in the novel. Sometimes magic works and sometimes tech works, but what determines this? What's the relationship between the supernatural community and the "normal" community? Do they know about each other? Are there special laws applied to shapeshifters or vampires? I don't know because I couldn't bring myself to finish.

Loved the style, the fantasy urban world, and the characters. Ready for book 2!

1/2/19-1/3/19 Reread - 3.5 stars I still enjoyed the world being built in this book a lot. I'm excited to reread the series/finish it in 2019. This one definitely suffers from some of the first book in a series items but it's still really fun. Some language that is not great also exists in this book so be warned. I'm hoping it reduces as I continue to read it.

2/24/12 - 2/29/12 First read 5 stars - I loved this book. It was the perfect blend of paranormal future and detective work. My love for it may be partial to being from GA and it taking place there. It's based in a world where magic and technology exist but there are fluxes in the magic where technology doesn't work. Includes a super sexy shapeshifter male and a stubborn strong female lead. It's a wonderful book I stayed up all night to finish it and bought the next in the series immediately.
