The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah is an emotional and powerful story set during the Nazi occupation of France, focusing on the lives of two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle. Each sister takes a very different, yet equally brave, path as they fight for survival and contribute to the resistance in their own way. Vianne stays behind to protect her family, making unimaginable sacrifices while living under the watchful eye of a German officer, and Isabelle joins the Resistance, risking her life to help downed British pilots escape Nazi-occupied France.

What makes this story so compelling is how it showcases that courage and strength come in many forms. Both sisters face immense challenges, and their journeys show the incredible resilience of women during times of war. It's a heartfelt, beautifully written novel that stays with you long after the final page. I found it deeply moving and a true tribute to the unsung heroes of WWII.

“I always thought it was what I wanted: to be loved and admired. Now I think perhaps I'd like to be known.”

A truly emotional story about survival and love during a dark, heart-wrenching time in our history. Both sisters made me feel a roller coaster of emotions, from frustration and anger to worry and empathy. Hannah's storytelling is captivating, and though fiction and emotionally-charged, I felt that the characters were a reflection of the struggles, fear, and heartbreak that so many went through. I'm always inspired to seek out non-fictional pieces about the historical topics she covers in her novels.
