Looking at the reviews for this it appears that some people can't take a low-grade YA sci-fi novella at face value. It was a good two hours of entertainment. Yes the heroes are overeager and shinily optimistic and perfect. Yes the villains are cookie-cutter and they make big bad cliche speeches about their big bad plans to destroy the world. And you know what? My inner ten year old enjoyed EVERY SECOND OF IT.

The GOOD: spunky kid has to save the world and his friends. He
Spoilergets betrayed along the way, finds unlikely allies, questionable allies, and straight-up not allies. Gets thrown in jail. Breaks out.
Pain and angst involved.

The BAD:
Spoilerhe didn't say goodbye to his family when given the chance

Both big villains rambled for a page each. It was truly horrible to have to read another villainous speech whatever will I do.

SpoilerI am kind of reneging on my earlier soapbox against cliffhangers but this is a three book series and they're all fairly short so

This was a YA novel. I rarely like anything YA. I love Gaiman's stuff, so it was still a disappointment.

I'll admit that I stopped halfway through and didn't bother to finish it. Maybe I was a bit put off that it wasn't Gaiman writing and the writing didn't do anything to me.

The first one was better. But this one was still interesting, with some nice characters and new plot lines. But it felt unfinished, and got confusing near the end. It takes some serious focusing to really understand, especially since we get involved with time in this one. Actually I kind of appreciated that, because it's truly mind bending. Props to the writers for coming up with this stuff. Worth it if you really, really like science fiction, because this is just pure concentrated science fiction.

A really good book, builds on the first one, adds some new elements. Builds depth to the world already established and leads right into the final book of the trilogy. It's a YA novel so easy enough to read over the course of a weekend but still written by authors that are established enough to build a world that doesn't depend wholly on a romantic plot to move the story along.

I can't recall when I finished this book nor that the ending was anything other than unremarkable. It wasn't as enjoyable as the first book and the mysterious fantasy girl trope is not terribly interesting to me nowadays.
