I loved this book. I read most of it all in one day. It’s such an interesting concept of what books and stories are, while being intense, moving, and generally an absorbing tale. Loved it loved it loved it.

Emmett, after suffering from a seemingly mysterious mental break, is sent off to a local woman's shop to become a binder. As Emmett becomes more and more engrossed in his apprenticeship, he learns things are not always what they seem. He is told time and time again that he is not allowed the locked room where the books are stored, which naturally peaks his curiosity. As he begins to learn the secrets of binding, he also encounters Lucian, who he seems to have an unknown connection to.

I went in this book with zero expectations except the premise seemed fascinating. Which it was. The idea of binding and memory were so fascinating and new that it hooked me right away. I grew to love Emmett and Lucian's perspective made my heart hurt. However, this book was dark. There are moments where I didn't think it could get worse and then it did. This book is certainly not for everyone. The story itself was fascinating and many of the characters captured my heart, but some of the content was tough to read.

TW: rape, suicide, incest

An interesting concept! I liked the story and the society that's built around binding. However, I think the author could have explored it even more,
for example the woman who did not even remember her own children and the people who sold their memories. It would be interesting to see this memory-concept from people less priviliged in this alternate society.
