Maybe someday I’ll listen to the audio, some of this story was a bit drawn out and it needed a kiwi accent to bring it all to life. Especially Poppy’s rambling. Otherwise So sweet. In another life I’m married to a Māori man. Matiu is dream daddy. Love the strong big family vibes.
I was kind of ready for this to be over. The descriptions of the pretty scenery and the jaguar/lioness cartoon were nice filler that add to the story but I was over it and just skimming at that point for relationship drama.

Once again, Rosalind James has captured her readers hearts and imagination with Stone Cold Kiwi, bringing to life her love and appreciation of New Zealand, the customs and culture in a 5 star story, set in the beautiful South Island of Aotearoa. The story of Poppy and Matiu, one a mother of 2 beautiful children (baby number 3 is about to make an appearance) and the other a doctor working in a busy hospital, Stone Cold Kiwi starts just as Poppy’s life changes, discovering her husband’s affair just after giving birth to their third child ... outside the hospital, on the grass, with Dr Matiu Te Mana quickly summoned to give a hand. What follows is an emotionally uplifting story that readers of contemporary romance will enjoy. Stone Cold Kiwi has drama, it has fun, it has love and romance, it has obstacles and dilemmas in the way of a happy ever after, and it has delightfully real and loveable characters. From
Matiu, who is deemed a player, to Poppy who has so much to give to the right person and of course the scene-stealers, Poppy’s children, Hamish who is somewhat reserved and a very responsible big brother, Olivia who is quite sassy, yet hilarious and of course new little baby Isobel. Rosalind James always captures the essence of children and how as secondary characters, they really add positively to the whole story, with their relationships with the adults in their life often a vital part of the book, and a part that I’m sure many readers can identify with and laugh out loud to, as well as well empathise with what’s going on in their heads.
Stone Cold Kiwi is ultimately a romance, a love story and its beautifully written, with both new and familiar faces making an appearance. It’s a definite 5 star read from me, as it is full of hope and persevere, of battling the odds with some steamy moments and of course some sweet moments too. Recommended for both new and familiar readers of Rosalind James books, you’ll just love this latest trip to New Zealand and all it has on offer.

* Summary: After delivering her third child into the hands of a sexy doctor on the lawn outside the hospital while her marriage finally falls apart, Poppy finds herself managing coparenting, divorce, postpartum, family conflict, and new love (with the sexy doctor).
* Stats: CR, M/F, open door, part of a series but stands alone.
* Notes: Hm… I don’t really like books that focus heavily on pregnancy/postpartum, which this does - but I liked how it was done here because it felt very “true” for the most part. I also liked how the FMC’s separation from her (impending) ex-husband was difficult, but that she really had to work through the challenges of dealing with coparenting and his general narcissism and selfishness. I thought the MMC was fine, although the promiscuity stuff felt a little tired, but I didn’t understand the FMC’s father at all - or how he got away with some of the things he did. Not the worst representation of medicine I’ve read - although, it would take pretty incredible circumstances for an A&E doctor to be suturing tears on the obstetrics ward… when there’s presumably an OB team available. Ah, well, needs must, I suppose. There were a few parts towards the end where everyone gets on the FMC’s case for something pretty unrealistic, which annoyed me, and I came away wondering if this relationship was really caught up in the breakdown of her first marriage or would actually stand on its own long term.

I would rate this book at 4.5 stars. I think Matiu and Poppy's story truly shows people taking a leap of faith.
I also may take a lot of heat for this, but I think Matiu was mislabeled as being a "player". His relationships were short lived, and he was honest, gentlemanly, and attentive. He didn't promise long term, HEA, or even the possibility of any of that. The whole scenario while shopping bothered me.
My heart went out to Poppy and her kids, especially with how the book began. Both outside of the Emergency, and on the way in to the Emergency. A testament to her strength and inner fortitude.
I loved the way Poppy handled her brother, father, and ex. I loved the way Mathiu took care of Poppy, her kids, and the rest of his family. He was always solidly by her side.
Mathiu and Poppy's relationship was a gradual development of growth and commitment. It was not always smooth, but it was fun, funny, gentle, sensual, and oh so sweet.

Have you ever finished a book that is so good, you don't want it to end? And you don't want to share how good the book is with other readers because they may not love it as much as you do? I do because that is how I feel about Stone Cold Kiwi.
But this time it is even better. The audio book is even better than the written word. Normally I do not enjoy two narrators but in this case, having a male and female narrator is what this story needs. Having just read the story back in February, I realized during my listen that some of the things I loved the first time are even better this time. Plus I found more to love about this story in the audio version.
Most people have a slight fear of Friday the 13th including Poppy Caldwell since that is the day her life as she has known it implodes. She is 10 months pregnant (or so it feels) and already has 2 kids under the age of 6. Her husband is on a "business trip" and has promised to be there for the birth of this child. Poppy has had some suspicions that his business trips are not quite really business trips. But she doesn't want to upset the boat right now. Until things implode.
Poppy has taken her kids to the zoo and goes into early labor. She manages to find a way to get to the closest hospital with both kids in labor and ends up giving birth out in the grass in front of the ER. Her son, Hamish, is a hero and a very strong and responsible young man for 5 and is the one who goes into the ER to ask for help for his mummy even if it means crossing a busy street.
Hamish leads the doctor who comes with him across the street back to the park where his mother and sister are. Dr. Matiu Te Mana is the new ER physician at the hospital and he is impressed with the courage of a small young boy who did everything he could to help his mum. Matiu has moved to the South Island for a change of pace. Koro, yes, that Koro, has encouraged him to make the move because he thinks his grandson needs the change.
Poppy also discovers that her SOB of a husband is cheating on her right after giving birth when as she is being wheeled into the ER on a gurney from the park she hears him whinging as he is taken from an ambulance with his mistress. Just one of these things is enough to make most people really develop a fear of Friday the 13th but Poppy is stronger than she realizes and she soars high from this low. And she also discovers that the wonderful Maori warrior who is the man who helps deliver her daughter and saves her life after the delivery is the man she is meant to be with.
Matiu needs a little kick from his Koro before he wakes up to realize the gem that Poppy is. But he falls in love with all of her kids without any help from Koro. He just needs to work through a few issues first.
And I would like to state that one slightly odd thing I enjoy about Ms. James' books is that they lead me to new recipes. Matiu orders a salad of soba noodles and tiger prawns at one point in the novel and I now have 2 new recipes to try.
I did receive a copy of this audiobook from the author in exchange for a fair and unbiased review. But I always have her books pre-ordered as soon as I can.
This is just in the first chapter that this action takes place. Poppy and Matiu are two strong characters who show that there is a life after the tragedy of your life falling apart.
Listen and enjoy the children since they are really the scene stealers in this version.

I really should just go ahead and give this 5 stars but there were some parts that were too gut wrenching. I loved this book. I loved the authors words. I loved it!!!!
