dark emotional reflective sad medium-paced

I read the Junji Ito manga version of this novel a few years ago, and was excited when i remembered I had picked up the novel version.

Despite being 'no longer human,' I think this book shows some of the most human parts of life. Depression, addiction, and fear of judgement.

Per the time period is was written, theres a few misogynistic views on women and their roles, but in context of the character and author, it kind of makes sense.

This book offers the reader a stark view into the life of a devoid man. Gives insight into the complete apathy to good, evil, or life while simply existing against his own will.

despite being less than 200 pages there's a lot to really dig into with this book - i'd recommend reading this and crime & punishment together to see how two similar characters interact with the world and their own sense of self

I've been wanting to read this book for a while and it did not dissapoint. The sad reality of people with mental health struggles who self-sabotage when they don't have the support needed, and how it can impact the people around them and cause harm to themselves and others.
It's sad because the main character did horrible things but you can see how it got to that point.
Awareness on neurodivergency (which was hinted at earlier in the book if you understand the symptoms though I doubt the author had that knowledge of what it was) has improved so much now compared to the time the author wrote the book but more work still needs to be done.
