The last sort of 50 pages got significantly better and redeemed the rest of the book but still not my cup of tea
The start was great. The last third was kind of hard to read and dragged. The epilogue really pulled it back at the end
boff no me acordaba de lo misógino que era...me desalienta un poco a la hora de leer "colegiala", pero ya que lo tengo de la biblio y las reseñas de ese son buenas igual sí que lo leo...
if you've read books by men about a man who has fucked up feelings and just doesn't get society you've read this already. maybe it would have hit different when i was 17 or if hadn't already read five other variations of the same thing.

Update: Upping this to 2 stars from 1 after discussing it with my book club. Thinking of this book in regards to what it means to be human and how to connect and interact with society made it a bit better.
This was odd and depressing. I didn’t like it that much, though the writing and translation were good.

Finally read this after downloading it for a book club back when I was a sophomore lol… I was very critical of this book then and I still am but I think parts of what I disliked about Yozo were things I disliked about myself in regards to feeling like I don’t fit in or that I have to hide parts of myself to be liked. Reading it now, I have a bit more kindness to myself and am a bit more sympathetic towards him in the first notebook. However, that’s like where my sympathy ends. I hate it when books have a socially awkward male mc who becomes a misogynist because he feels slighted by society. I think there is an interesting question of what it means to be considered human but Yozo’s hypocrisy is so frustrating. It makes me wonder if Dazai also doesn’t view women as people…
