Grotesque yet polite. The question of what it means to be human, the likes of humanity and whether or not your experiences are a reflection of you or you are a reflection of your experiences. I didn’t know whether to pity Yozo because of what he was handed in life or turn away in disgust because of who he chose to become because of it.

I kind of set my expectations too high and was disappointed with the misogyny , the author treats women like theyre a monolith and another thing that made me feel disgusted was the chapter revolving Yoshiko.

Yozo kind of felt like an autistic child especially in the beginning of the book , he kept masking and being scared he’d get “found out” . I feel like his insecurities and struggles might resonate with some readers which is one of the few positives of this novel.
