This book is Bojack Horseman before they invented therapy and rehab. Didn’t much live up to the hype though. People blew this up to be some profoundly terrible set of events. It was definitely a good read to say the least! I was very immersed in it page by page, I will say that it’s definitely an uncomfortable read to say the least. When I started it I had to take small little breaks just because the content is very heavy.
Overall a solid page turner. Osamu Dazai would’ve loved Fight Club.

I originally avoided this book, knowing that it was a hard read (emotionally), and it would have me overly questioning things in my life that I didn't want to think about at the time. Once I got past the initial apprehension, I was able to enjoy how well-written and introspective the book was.
It's not a perfect book by any means, but I do think it's an interesting read! (Lots of trigger warnings, by the way, so if you're not in a good place mentally, I would NOT recommend this book)

I understand that he was supposed to be a gray character but his constant complaints and cruel words he used to describe women was tiring for me. There lacked any actual complexity in his environment. No actual burdens.
enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half

loser manifesto tbh
I've definitely read worse books, even in this last month, but this is unbearably Woe Is Me inferiority complex bullshit. it's not even insufferable; there's just such little patience to be had for the material that it's never really hateable, instead an almost agonising indifference. the I'm So Talented But Tortured And A Little Freak shtick gets old fast and only stinks worse and worse when Dazai takes a random swing for misogynist thought on top of... yeah, viewing poor people, sex workers, and the disabled as less than human.
it's just a really unproductive and uninteresting worldview to have. and worse, I have to assume it is Dazai's considering the autobiographical elements and his suicide. hopelessly nihilistic, solipsistic, unfortunately moronic. have to be inherently distrusting of anyone ranting and raving about this motherfucker because what are YOU getting out of it?
pretty short at least, and honestly not That Bad of a READ, but corny all the same. cleared it in an afternoon and it still doesn't feel worth my time.
