This book was interesting. I mean, it IS a Caldecott award winner. So it was cute enough. But... stealing? She steals the magic paddle and lives happily ever after? Weird.

This folktale from Japan tells of a woman who loves to laugh and make dumplings. She must really love those dumplings because when one rolls out of her house, she puts herself in danger trying to catch up with it. Happily, her great sense of fun gets her out of a bad situation. The illustrator uses black and white line drawings and full color paintings to show the little woman's location relative to the rest of the earth. For example, when she's in the underworld, the underworld is colorful. When she's not, it isn't.

The illustrations in this were lovely, especially the pictures of the woman's house! We've been learning a lot about context of folktales and who story "belongs" to, and I still don't know how I feel about it. But yeah. I digress.

This story is unusual and quirky enough to call for multiple readings.

For: folklore fans; readers looking for an exciting book with suspense.

Possible red flags: capture and imprisonment.

I loved this giggly woman. Not only does she know how to cook, but she is also really clever, and doesn't let the oni get the better of her.

Illustrated by Blair Lent.

Caldecott Medal Winner 1973.
