Hilarious read...just what I needed. I love those kooky residents of Pine Cove.
This was my first Christopher Moore book, and it will not be the last. If you want a fun, adult, entertaining novel then this is the one for you. It has blues-men, aging movie stars, pothead constables, and a wide array of just deliciously weird and wacky characters. Then there is Steve. Steve is great. Steve is a monster with a conscience. Steve also has revenge on his mind, and maybe a weed whacker. You will just have to read it to understand.I could hardly put this novel down and it never failed to bring a smile to my face, and more than an occasional laugh out loud moment. Well done and thank you Mr Moore for your entertaining novel.
I lost interest around the point where a garden tool was used to sexually satisfy the eponymous sea-monster's 7 foot organ.
I enjoyed Lamb by Christopher Moore so I thought I'd try out another book by him. This book was pretty silly. A seaside town is disrupted when a centuries-old sea beast comes ashore and begins wreaking havok on the town. Meanwhile the town psychiatrist begins messing around with everyone's antidepressant prescriptions and everything goes off kilter.

An exercise in '90s whimsy without much to bring to the contemporary reader. I discuss Practical Demonkeeping and the rest of the Pine Cove series in more detail over at Harris' Tome Corner, here.
I hit this book at just the right time. I was in the mood for something humorous and a bit wacky. This fit perfectly, in that odd way that Christopher Moore books will.
So, kooky, so funny and so original - on to the last book to wrap up the series!!
Moore, Christopher. The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove. Pine Cove, No. 2. Morrow, 2004.
I understand that a production of Moore’s Dirty Job is currently under development with only a writer and producer so far, and I have no clue how long it has been in development. It may be what used to be called Vaporware in the software industry. What I don’t understand is why Netflix, Amazon, HBO or the like have not developed a mini-series based on the Pine Cove series. Lust Lizard would seem to be a natural. Sea monsters, small-town romance and violence—how could they go wrong? Moore is Charles Addams meets Twin Peaks. How could they go wrong?

The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove is set in Pine Cove, Calif., the same fictional town as Moore's first novel. The book is a fun read for anyone who wants to visit Moore's early work. It's simple, silly, sexy, and sarcastic.
Although significantly more linear and less complex than his later work, Moore's characters more than make up for it, especially stand-in protagonist Town Constable Theophilus Crowe. While he might not be your favorite when stacked up against former B-movie star Molly Michon (or some of the other oddball Pine Cove characters), Theo is key in helping drive the delishly absurd plot forward.
In this case, it's a prehistoric sea-beast with the ability to change form and exude a pheromone that inspires uncontrollable lust among animals and humans that visit Pine Cove. The result, beyond transforming several into naked pilgrams and others into sea-beast snacks, accidentally puts Theo on a case to uncover police corruption in Pine Cove.
