I enjoy the time period these mysteries take place in. I also found it especially interesting how the antagonists were using bombs against a gov't--some things never change.

not as good as i wanted it to be. the irish were supposed to be the enemy but they were infinitely more like able than the british. i didn’t like the anti irish sentiment, especially bc the “bad guys” were just dumb kids.

also the narrator wasn’t great at accents, which always bothers me and definitely made the book a little worse.

A great new adventure with an ending I did not see coming.

Another average Victorian-era mystery. Not much mystery this time, more of a spy novel, which brings me to my biggest irritation- when you are a spy infiltrating an organization, for your safety and wellbeing, you NEVER drop your identity. Never. I have read many spy novels, I am an expert on this fact. (hah!)

Actually, none of the characters were terribly believable. It was very easy for me to guess the leader of the group (the only real bit of mystery in this novel) -
Spoiler just look for the character who doesn't behave the way you would expect
So, this was a plot-driven novel rather than character-driven. It's not my favorite kind, but that's just me.

The audiobook was fine. Not great. Heavy accents and lots of different voices make it more difficult to listen to, but still fine for background listening while doing something else.

Even though my review sounds all negative, this book is still a solid 3-star rating (which to me, is average, good, I liked it). Amusing plot, characters that are (ahem) characters, clean, it all adds up to a good light read.

I'm loving these stories, but I do dearly wish Mr. Thomas were not under the misapprehension that "shall" is the precise 18th century translation for the modern "will." Since I'm listening to the series on audio, I can't even autocorrect in my mind. It scratches my eardrums a bit.

Nonetheless, polymath, polyglossic detective stalking the streets of Victorian London with a well-meaning assistant bumbling in his wake but learning quickly as he goes? Yes, please!
