The sentence-level writing in this collection is fantastic -- strong and sinewy. The stories are atmospheric and mysterious, with strange, vivid images. Half the time I didn't know what was going on, but I chewed on the sentences with delight. I especially enjoyed the way the stories blurred the lines between human and animal, or sometimes even between human and inanimate objects. After a while the stories felt a bit repetitive, though, but I hardly ever seem to be able to stay engaged through a whole story collection, so that could be my own problem. Very interested to read more by this author.
