It took me awhile to finish this one. I had to put it down a few times, and I even had to skip a few pages. I found it disorienting, and quite brutal... yet very captivating and sensual as well, which is why I kept going back to it. I think by their nature, short stories are disorienting to begin with - the reader is generally dropped in and out of narrative by necessity. In the world of Fen, it often took me several pages for the fog to lift sufficiently until I felt I could see the story. I will definitely look for longer works by this author as she has a unique voice, and I would love to see her stretch her wings over a novel.

Dark and hungry and earthy and strange.
There a few pieces in the middle that are too vague and unformed, but they do serve to continue the atmosphere and feeling of the fen that is so vital to the more fleshed stories.  I quite liked a several, The Scattering was excellent, and I appreciate the repetitions of theme. I would read another by this author.

As a avid sci-fi/fantasy reader, I was expecting more unreal elements in the story, but this was straight fiction. I'm not sure I got the feminist message that the intro touted but it was still an interesting perspective on a slice of life I don't consider often.
