A surreal and slightly magical collection of short stories. Talking foxes, possessive houses, relationships, monsters and more. A treat of a collection.
some highlights: a bruise the shape and size of a door handle, language, heavy devotion
I don't know how to feel about this book. It sort of hits you in waves.
I don't know if I wasn't smart enough to understand this book but towards the end I was just not understanding what any of the stories were even about. It was beautifully written gibberish, though, so I'll give it two stars.
Really need something a bit livelier than this to get me out of my reading slump!

This was not at all my cup of tea. Some interesting ideas, sure, but I got lost in the detailed writing. Wasn't scary, wasn't creepy, just weird.
Unique collection. Some thematic overlap in the stories, but each has such a distinct voice that it still feels fresh.

Generally speaking, I’ve struggled to find short story collections that blow me away as a whole. That being said, this comes close.
With ‘Fen’ Johnson creates a lush, surreal landscape that oozes oddity and indulges in the macabre. This collection is ravenous, possessive, atmospheric but in a way that sneaks up on you until it’s nested in the corners of your brain. I was left with a feeling I can only relate to playing hooky: good, bad, and like I held a secret no one else knew.
In short, it was wonderful. I can’t wait to see what she does with a novel.
