I liked it okay. The first few stories were very strong, but they kind of puttered out for me as it went along. The first story is amazing, so I was happy to at least have read that one. The writer reminds me of Karen Russell and Angela Carter, who I love. I look forward to following her work in the future, even if I didn't love every story in this bunch.

It's an eclectic collection of stories, but they all take place on the Fen, where monsters hide inside and out, and the violence of womanhood is explored fearlessly. Johnson's writing feels like being in a familiar room with the lights off - at first you're not sure where you stand, but each word brings you a little closer to something you recognise, even if it wasn't what you were expecting.

Short story collections are always a joy to read, and the way the stories overlap and intermingle in the mysterious world of Fen is fantastic.
I'm sorry, I really didn't want to finish this. I just found something very unfinished and alienating about the writing style. I was totally disconnected from each story (which were all somewhat repetitive in nature to the extent that they seemed to blend into one and were, ultimately, forgettable).
